This is like the Day of Terrible Pre-Election Stories On Repeat. First, Rep. Jim Moran’s kid assaults his girlfriend, potentially for stealing that ridiculous scarf he seems to own and wear in every photo, and now, Sen. Robert Menendez, who we covered pre-election for his donor-funded sexytime flights to Puerto Rico, where he took it upon himself to stimulate the economy of America’s potential 51st state by underpaying his hookers. Allegedly.
At any rate, if people were concerned about the prostitute story, they didn’t show it. Apparently now, everyone just assumes that Congressmen take flights to far off locations in order to have sex with women whose company they pay for. It’s a thing. So Menendez’s extracurricular activities flew low on the radar during election season. But it seems the more interesting story is what was happening in his office.
U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez employed as an unpaid intern in his Senate office an illegal immigrant who was a registered sex offender, now under arrest by immigration authorities, The Associated Press has learned. The Homeland Security Department instructed federal agents not to arrest him until after Election Day, a U.S. official involved in the case told the AP.
Luis Abrahan Sanchez Zavaleta, an 18-year-old immigrant from Peru, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in front of his home in New Jersey on Dec. 6, two federal officials said. Sanchez, who entered the country on a now-expired visitor visa from Peru, is facing deportation and remains in custody. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details of Sanchez’s immigration case.
It’s good to know that when DHS identifies a threat, they do a comprehensive analysis of how much damage it will do to the administration in power before executing the laws, even when the ICE is directing them to arrest the guy as soon as possible. “You know, there’s a registered illegal alien sex offender pushing paper in Congress? Meh. Hasn’t done anything yet that he hasn’t already been convicted of! We should probably just leave him alone until this whole Presidential thing blows over.”
The best part of this story is possibly that Menendez, who is constantly pushing immigration reform even when Congress has more important things to do, like take lobbyist vacations to Hawaii to hear about the benefits of recycled truck tires, was running all of his immigration proposals through a guy who had violated American immigration laws, while not paying him anything. Sanchez was an unpaid intern. So Menendez knew what he was talking about when he was talking about the oppressive employment practices that plague the undocumented worker.
As it turns out, Sanchez applied to be a part of the immigration amnesty program Obama passed by Executive fiat, but was denied because, as it happens, the US would rather not take your tired, your poor, and your people on the sex offender registry.
